The awareness programme touched on the crocodile’s risk of extinction caused by illegal hunting, pollution and destruction of its habitat, he said. “The aim here is to provide a platform where families, especially children, can learn about conservation efforts in a fun and safe way, especially about how these types of animals are affected by their environment,” Azizul said when contacted by StarMetro. “MBPG recently hosted a World Croc Day as part of their awareness campaign to protect wildlife. “The sanctuary will hopefully be a place to protect and increase the population of the more than 100 crocodiles that have been placed there,” he said. Tiram assemblyman Azizul Bachok said the Pasir Gudang Estuarine Crocodile Sanctuary would serve as a centre of knowledge for all information regarding estuarine crocodiles in Johor. He added that the largest crocodile at the current sanctuary was 4.5m long and weighed about 480kg. “We expect to start our groundwork by the third quarter of this year, because of the crocodiles’ growing population in the Tanjung Langsat sanctuary,” he said.
